The Scholars to Leaders Series is a unique initiative of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies that is open to all students and scholars across all careers at Western – undergraduate, graduate, professional, and postdoctoral. The Series brings students together with university leaders who are uniquely skilled in mentoring candidates as they prepare for next stages of academic competition and global careers. The monthly luncheon events showcase guest speakers who share valuable insight and expertise on critical aspects of leadership from their own career experiences. Pizza is available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis but feel free to bring your own lunch.
The Series runs from September to March (except December) and each event is held on the last Wednesday of every month from 12:30-1:30pm in the Atrium of the International and Graduate Affairs Building (IGAB). No registration is required.
Mentoring: Undergraduate Students
This module provides resources and learning for graduate students in their roles as mentors for undergraduate students.
Discovering the Entrepreneur Within
Discovering the Entrepreneur Within has participants analyze successful entrepreneurial ventures and identify what it took for those entrepreneurs to reach their goals. Using an interactive, team-based approach, this full-day workshop builds awareness of the current Canadian entrepreneurial landscape and resources available to those looking to start their own business. Using the tools and techniques used in the first part of the workshop, teams create a product or service concept that they will present to the group. May the best idea win!
Essentials of Productive Teams
More than ever, organizational success depends on people working together - effectively. The pressure to communicate productively, quickly turn ideas into profitable action and consistently deliver results never decreases. Using team simulation exercises, participants work from a clear understanding of personal strengths and an appreciation of the differences in others will be the foundation of success in the future.
Foundations of Project Management I
Learning teams of approximately five people each will be formed at the beginning of this session and will work together throughout the session. This will enable the participants to enhance their learning from each other, to experience the development of a strong team, and to develop a model of the culture that they will want to create and execute their projects.
Foundations of Project Management II
Participants will work in learning teams of approximately 5 people formed at the beginning of the two-day workshop. Building on the skills developed in Foundations of Project Management I: A team-based approach, this workshop will emphasize skills of risk assessment, estimation, budgeting, resource schedule crisis management and continued focus on participating, building and managing teams.
Time Management (online workshop)
If you find yourself frequently running out of time on a project or impending deadlines are making you anxious, this workshop is for you. You’ll learn how to make the most of every minute, avoid procrastination and other “time thieves,” and create achievable plans and schedules, based on project management best practices.
