CGS - Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements

The Canada Graduate Scholarships - Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) program supports high calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad, and they are available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are active Tri-Agency CGS holders (CGSM, CGSD or Vanier CGS).

Value

  • A Supplement of up to $6,000 is awarded to help offset the costs of undertaking research studies outside Canada for a defined period of 3-6 months.
  • The CGS award must be active at the time the research study abroad begins.

Timelines and Deadlines

  • Annual Tri-Agency Launch - late April
  • SGPS Application Deadlines:
    • Spring Competition - May 15
    • Fall Competition - September 15
  • Agency Deadlines for Universities:
    • Spring Competition - June 10
    • Fall Competition - October 10
  • Release of Decisions by Agency:
    • Spring Competition - August for NSERC and SSHRC; September for CIHR
    • Fall Competition - December (all agencies)

Allocations

  • Each Canadian university is allocated a predetermined number of Supplements by NSERC and SSHRC every year. CIHR allows each university to forward all eligible applications to CIHR for consideration.
  • Western's 2017 allocations are:
    • CIHR - all eligible and complete applications are forwarded to the agency
    • NSERC - 2 remaining
    • SSHRC - 1 remaining
  • Annual allocations are normally provided to universities in the spring and awards are determined through two annual internal competitions - the Spring Competition that closes nationally on June 10th and the Fall Competition that closes October 10th.
  • Universities have the flexibility to recommend as many applications as they wish in any given year, as long as the number of applications recommended to NSERC or SSHRC for funding from both competitions does not exceed either agency's annual allocation.
