Admission Requirements
  • an honours degree or equivalent, in a related field for the M.Sc. program and a Master's degree in Geology for the Ph.D. program
  • the minimum standard for admission is a 70% (B) average for the most recent two years of undergraduate study, or the most recent 10 full courses taken.
  • Applications may be considered from persons with a variety of backgrounds in addition to Geology and Geophysics:
    Chemistry, Physics, Physical Anthropology, Physical Geography, Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Zoology, Applied Mathematics.
    Applicants from these backgrounds, if accepted, may have to take more than the minimum number of graduate courses for credit to improve their background knowledge prior to defence. Decision on this is on a case-by-case basis.
  • every student from overseas whose first language is not English must take ONE of:
    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination and obtain a score of at least 575 on the old scale or 233 on the newer scale. For the September 2005 version, the required minimum is 92 with no individual score below 20 and a minimum of 23 in the speaking component.
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing Service of the British Council) and receive a score of at least 6.
    • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) of the University of Michigan and receive a score of 85 overall with a minimum of 80 on each of parts 1, 2 and 3.
