Anyone who has applied to a Western Graduate Program is invited to attend an informative lunch and workshops series. It is in no way connected with the application or admission process. Registration for this portion of the day will be through an on-line form.
Schedule for the afternoon
| 12:00 noon | The mini-conference will begin in The Great Hall of the Somerville House Building. Lunch will be provided. |
| 12:45 – 1:30 p.m. | The Best Student Experience - Graduate Student Panel Discussion. An opportunity for prospective students to ask questions of current Western students |
| 1:30 – 2:15 p.m. | Strategies for Success in and After Graduate School, Career Development and the 360° Graduate Student Development Initiative – A look at the comprehensive programs that address teaching preparation, cross-cultural communication, career development, and graduate supervision that are included in this initiative. Understanding Western’s commitment to providing the best graduate student experience. Led by Gerry Goodine, The Career Centre at Western, and Natasha Patrito, the Teaching Support Centre. |
| 2:15 – 3:00 p.m. | Getting Mentored in Graduate School – Managing expectations, understanding what is required of you and of your supervisor in order to build a positive and productive relationship. Led by Dr. Betsy Skarakis-Doyle, Faculty Associate, Graduate Supervision. |
| 3:00 - 3:10 p.m. | Refreshment Break |
| 3:10 - 3:50 p.m. | Financing Your Graduate Education – This presentation will look at numerous different sources of funding, External Scholarships, Western’s funding guarantees, and opportunities for GTAs and GRAs. Led by Paula Menzies, External Scholarship Coordinator in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. |
| 3:50 – 4:30 p.m. | Writing in Graduate School – Writing for a new audience and making writing your job |
| 4:30 p.m. | Bus Tour – We have reserved a bus tour for those of you who stated you would like a campus tour. The bus will leave from Bus Stop #1 (Oxford Drive at Weldon Library). |
