Mandatory Training

To support success in graduate studies, all incoming graduate students are required to complete the following mandatory training in their first term, as early milestones in their graduate program. Training must be completed in order to progress beyond the first term of your degree.

MANDATORY TRAINING

SGPS Academic Integrity Module

The SGPS Academic Integrity Module is a non-course milestone in every graduate program at Western. All incoming graduate students must successfully complete this milestone in the first term of their degree to progress to the second term. This short module, developed by SGPS, is designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and resources to abide by fundamental academic principles during your graduate education and to help reduce occurrences of scholastic offenses.

Graduate students in their first term can access the module in the Graduate Student Web Services Portal. Instructions regarding access and how to complete the quiz will be emailed to you in the last half of the month before your first term begins.

The module provides an introduction to academic ethics and the fundamental principles of academic integrity through Indigenous and Euro-Western perspectives. The module provides a detailed explanation of a variety of behaviours that are considered scholastic offences in an academic community and provides guidance on how to avoid engaging in academic integrity. The module also introduces students to the policies and procedures related to scholastic offences and research integrity as well as to the consequences of engaging in academic misconduct. The module outlines SGPS’ expectations with respect to generative artificial intelligence use in graduate education and provides a brief introduction to Canadian copyright law as it relates to academic integrity.

All participants are required to interact with and complete three learning exercises within the module:

  • Review and acknowledge completion of the provided graduate education on academic integrity.
  • Interact with a series of case studies designed to support the content and apply your understanding of the module.
  • Successfully complete a 10-question quiz designed to evaluate your knowledge of academic integrity.
You have an unlimited number of opportunities to pass the module, and no penalties or records exist due to failed attempts.

You can verify your completion of the Academic Integrity Module by logging in again to the Graduate Student Web Services Portal. If complete, there should be a green “complete” next to the option for the module in the Portal’s main menu. If incomplete, there will be a red “incomplete” instead.

If you believe if you have already finished the module, but are still receiving reminder emails, please verify your completion. Sometimes cases or questions are missed by accident.

If you do not complete the SGPS Academic Integrity Module milestone within the first term of your graduate program, you will not be permitted to progress to the second term of your program (which means you cannot enrol in courses, receive funding, or be employed as a teaching or research assistant).
Yes, you are required to take the module again. It is a new and separate milestone in each graduate degree. Additionally, the module's content is revised on a regular basis so it may not be the same module you took previously.
No, you did not complete the correct module. The Centre for Teaching and Learning offers an academic integrity tutorial for undergraduate students on OWL Brightspace. Completing this tutorial does not satisfy the requirement to complete the SGPS Academic Integrity Module.

MANDATORY TRAINING

Gender-Based and Sexual Violence (GBSV) Prevention Education: Supporting Safer Professional Practice

GBSV Prevention Education training is a skills-based, small group, gender-integrated, live facilitated two-hour Zoom training session focused on the skills graduate students need to decrease harm in their roles as students, teaching assistants, research assistants, lab work and future researchers.

This training is a required non-course milestone in every graduate program at the University. Failure to complete the module will prevent you from progressing beyond the first term of your degree.
