Thesis Defense Only Status
Students who have completed all degree requirements, including submission of their thesis for examination, but are unable to defend before the end of the current term may be eligible for Thesis Defence Only (TDO) status in the subsequent term.
TDO status allows students to remain registered while completing their thesis defence requirements without paying tuition fees. Students remain responsible for applicable part-time ancillary fees and, where applicable, UHIP fees. TDO status may be held for one term only.
How To Apply
To be considered for TDO status:
- Submit your thesis in the Veritas Thesis Examination Portal for preliminary examination.
- Once your preliminary thesis submission has been received in Veritas, select TDO Status from the Veritas menu.
- Review the information and implications of TDO status and submit your TDO Request.
Please note that students cannot apply for TDO status until their thesis has been submitted for preliminary examination. Access to the TDO Request option is made available only after a preliminary thesis submission has been received in Veritas. Submission of a TDO request does not guarantee approval, as all requests are reviewed to confirm eligibility.
Maintaining TDO Status
You must:
- Successfully complete your thesis examination.
- Complete all required thesis revisions.
- Submit your final thesis to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies prior to the end of your TDO term.
If you do not meet these conditions, you will be required to pay part-time tuition retroactively for the TDO term and will continue to be registered until your final thesis is submitted.
Thesis Submission Deadlines
Students remain responsible for meeting the minimum thesis submission timelines required for examination:
- Doctoral students: Preliminary thesis submission at least five weeks before the scheduled defence.
- Master's students: Preliminary thesis submission at least three weeks before the scheduled defence.
