The objective of this agreement is to establish a collaborative arrangement for the purposes of providing high quality research training to qualified students and visiting research fellows from Chinese universities with the aim of developing education and research collaborations between Western and Chinese universities.

Incoming International Students

Value

  • Master's: Western will offer each candidate a financial support package (which may include the value of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Graduate Fellowship, or other awards) equivalent to tuition fees, subject to them receiving full financial support from CSC. CSC will support each candidate with a living allowance (which includes UHIP and Western health and dental plans) as prescribed by the Chinese Government, a round trip ticket and visa application fees
    • Funding will last up to 24 months, with up to two scholarships awarded annually
  • Doctoral: Western will offer each candidate a financial support package minimally equivalent to the tuition fee and CSC will consider applicants for an annual living allowance (which includes UHIP), a return airfare to London by the most economical route, and visa application fees. The annual living allowance for each student from CSC is determined by the Chinese Government
    • Funding will last up to 48 months
  • Postdoctoral Fellow: CSC will provide the visiting research award as prescribed from time to time by the Chinese Government (which includes UHIP), a return airfare to London by the most economical route, and visa application fees. Western reserves the right to top-up stipends to visiting research fellows, but is not required to do so.
    • Funding will be for 3-12 months

Application

  • Candidates should apply directly to Western for admission before the application deadline set by Western. Candidates should specify in their application if they are applying for the Western/CSC joint scholarship scheme
  • Western will evaluate the candidates, and decide which candidates are admissible to its programs. By March 20th each year, Western will provide CSC and each accepted candidate with a copy of an offer letter. Offer letters may be unconditional in terms of academic performance and English language capability if all application materials have been submitted well ahead or may be conditional to further evaluation should the application materials not be complete at the time. For doctoral candidates, the offer should also clarify that Western will offer each candidate a financial support package (which may include the value of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Graduate Research Assistantship or other awards) equivalent to tuition fees, subject to them receiving full financial support from CSC
  • After receiving an offer letter from Western, candidates must also apply to CSC for funding by completing an application for funding and employer reference. A hard copy of the signed CSC Application Form along with the completed CSC Employer Reference Form, a copy of the full application to Western (including other supporting documents such as communications with the supervisor), and a copy of an offer letter from Western must be submitted to CSC through CSC's application agencies by March 20th each year
  • CSC will evaluate the candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities, and provide Western with a final list of scholarship recipients and inform the successful candidates
