Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards
The Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards are a one-time initiative designed to recruit international or returning Canadian doctoral students to Canada. These awards support the recruitment of doctoral students in priority areas, helping build capacity, strengthen the research ecosystem and enhance Canada’s global competitiveness.
Priority Research Areas
These new awards will invest in eight priority research areas:
- Advanced digital technologies (AI, quantum, and cybersecurity)
- Health, including biotechnology
- Clean technology and resource value chains
- Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic
- Food and water security
- Democratic and community resilience
- Manufacturing and advanced materials
- Defence and dual-use technologies

Value
$40,000 per year for three years
Applicant Eligibility and Nomination Procedure
Applications from doctoral students are only accepted through a nomination process from a potential faculty supervisor. Please contact the appropriate faculty supervisor(s) to apply for this award.
- Nominees can be of any citizenship, including Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected people.
- Nominees cannot have a current affiliation with a Canadian institution and must be currently studying or working abroad.
- Nominees must be eligible to enrol in a doctoral program at the nominating institution in Canada as of the award activation date.
- Nominee must have applied for admission to their proposed doctoral program.
Nomination Application Requirements
The Nomination Application must include the following documents:
- Nomination Form (fillable pdf).
- Required signatures on the Eligibility Attestation Checklist.
- Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the nominee.
- Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the nominator.
- Nominee transcripts (unofficial) from all post-secondary institutions attended.
A faculty nominator may submit one doctoral student nomination.
Deadline: Monday, February 9, 2026 at 12 noon (no exceptions)

Application Timeline
- February 9, 2026: Nomination Applications submitted to SGPS for adjudication.
- March 4, 2026: Nomination Applications submitted to Tri-Agencies.
Evaluation Criteria
Nomination Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Academic excellence and research potential of the nominee.
- Quality of the proposal, nominee's academic alignment with the priority research area, and the nominee’s potential to carry out the proposed research.
- Nominator’s expertise in the proposed research topic and the ability to facilitate and support the nominee conducting the proposed research.
Other Considerations
- Representation from a wide range of disciplines, from across the three funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC).
- Consideration of a variety of Priority Research Areas, where possible.
Please note that no more than one nomination package per nominator will be forwarded to the Tri-Agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC).

Holding the Award at Western
Acceptance and Activation
- Accept the offer of award from the agency following the instructions provided in the letter of offer, and then activate it for payment by completing the required agency forms.
- Initiate the payment process at Western by following these steps:
- Log in to your Student Center account
- Select ‘Student Financials’ from the main menu, then 'Financial Aid and Funding'
- Select ‘Graduate External Scholarships’ and follow the activation steps
- Choose the start date that matches the date stipulated by the agency in the offer
Method of Payment
- At Western University the annual value of an award is divided into three equal installments and each is pre-paid to the award holder’s Student Center account at the start of every term (September, January and May).
Terms and Conditions
- The Tri-Agencies (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) have harmonized their post-award policies, where possible, for research training programs and have incorporated these policies into a harmonized Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder's Guide. These policies became effective September 1, 2016 and the Guide is available on NSERC's website. The guide contains all the forms that training award holders and the University need to facilitate post-award activities allowed by the Tri-Agencies.
