Describe your research.
The central idea behind mathematical biology is that we observe patterns in nature and we are curious what is behind these patterns. So we construct a mathematical model much like an experimenter would design an in-field experiment to investigate a specific question. In my research I investigate predatory learning – for instance crows have learned to avoid brightly coloured ladybugs because the bright colours mean they are toxic. So this learning behaviour adds a new feature to the prey-predator dynamics that could reveal patterns we have overlooked.

What is it about your grad program that enables you to thrive and be successful?
My supervisor Professor Geoff Wild. He is a brilliant researcher, but more importantly, he makes time for me and is supportive of my interest in science communication.
Do you belong to any university or community groups?
I am a member of the Western Comedy Club.
What’s the best advice you could give to someone considering applying to your graduate program?
It’s a small department, so make friends outside your department, and if possible outside of school as well.

Whether you are interested in pursuing an MSc or PhD degree, we have much to offer. - An absolute minimum grade average of a B+ (78%), calculated on courses taken in the last two years, is required for admission to our graduate programs. However, please note that most successful applicants have averages above 85%. (Percentages here are for North American grading systems. Different grading systems in other countries are taken into account.)
- Before applying, you should decide on one or two areas of interest from our research areas. You will be asked to indicate on your application which research group you wish to join. Successful applicants are then assigned a temporary research supervisor from that group, with final supervisor decision made once the student is here and has a chance to talk to the group members. Note, however that some supervisors may not accept students in a given year -- if you have a specific person you wish to work with, please feel free to contact them directly.
English Language Proficiency
- Foreign students from non-English speaking countries are expected to provide Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination scores [minimum acceptable score is 550 (paper based score), 213 (computer based score), 86 (internet-based score, with no individual score below 20) or 6.0/9 (IELTS)]. The GRE is NOT required.
